Counseling is recommended when you notice that your mental health is starting to negatively impact your life. This may manifest itself through stress, anxiety, relational dissatisfaction, or a number of other emotional realities. Perhaps your friends or a healthcare practitioner have noticed a change and encouraged you to reach out or you are experiencing a crisis. Ideally, counseling is a part of preventative care much like other healthcare services but it can be beneficial no matter what level of distress you are currently experiencing. If you are unsure about whether or not counseling is for you, Chuck offers a free 15-minute consultation to answer questions and make recommendations.
One of the most important aspects of a counseling relationship is trustworthiness. It’s important that you feel comfortable with your counselor and have a sense that they are wholly dedicated to your well-being. That doesn’t mean it will always be easy because gaining mental health requires time, introspection and personal responsibility - yet, you should have confidence that your counselor has your best interests at heart through his or her work with you. Some clients prefer a counselor who has had similar life experiences or is of a certain age and/or gender. While these preferences are important to acknowledge and exist for a number of very good reasons, research has shown that - above all else - a counselor’s unconditional positive regard towards the client is the most important agent for healing. Chuck gives great weight to his relationship with clients and prioritizes his client’s needs, ensuring that he is a good fit for them. In order to know whether or not he is your best fit, you will need to give him a call and he can answer your specific questions. He is well-connected in the Big Bend area and will refer clients to other counselors when he believes they will experience greater healing with someone else. It’s important to be honest with your counselor about any concerns and questions you have about them. Much like every relationship, building trust is a process that takes time and open communication.
Chuck charges $100 for a 50-minute session. However, he never wants finances to be a barrier in a person’s search for mental health and has some limited scholarship availability for those who qualify. When he is not able to personally meet a client’s needs due to financial constraints, he will provide additional community resources. He does not take insurance but is willing to provide clients with a super-bill including codes that will allow them to file for out-of-network reimbursement with their insurance company when they qualify.
Clients usually come to counseling once a week or every two weeks. The more frequently you are able to be in counseling, the more momentum you will see. That said, when clinically appropriate, Chuck has some flexibility as it relates to length of sessions and regularity depending on financial and scheduling restraints.
